Neck Lifts in Miami Beach, FL: What to Expect During Recovery

Neck Lift

May 05, 2026 | 4 minute read

A neck lift, or lower rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure that improves visible signs of aging in the jawline and neck. As you age, your neck loses its elasticity, which can lead to jowls, wrinkles, and the infamous “turkey neck.” This change in appearance can affect your confidence and make you feel as though your youth is slipping away, even when you feel sprightly.

The procedure repositions the tissue underlying the neck skin, tightens the platysma muscles, and trims away excess skin. The result is a firmer neck and a more defined jawline. While the road to recovery may differ from patient to patient, there is a general recovery timeline to keep in mind to prepare for your neck lift surgery and ensure optimal results.

Neck Lift Recovery Timeline

Patients should expect to take approximately one to two weeks off work as they begin the initial recovery phase. This applies if you have a desk job; if you have a more physically demanding position, you can expect to be out of work for a longer period. Dr. Schwitzer will provide detailed postoperative instructions to help you achieve a successful recovery and to evaluate your progress.

Week 1

The first week is usually the most uncomfortable. You can expect swelling, bruising, soreness, and neck tightness and pressure. A compression bandage or dressing can be wrapped around your face and neck to reduce swelling and bruising after your neck lift surgery. Some patients may receive a small drain to discharge excess blood or fluids that might collect underneath the skin.

It’s important to sleep with your head elevated, to rest, and to follow Dr. Schwitzer’s incision care instructions. Expect swelling and bruising to be the most noticeable during this phase. Follow-up visits are also essential during the recovery process. Your neck lift incisions may be checked, bandages removed or readjusted, and swelling monitored. Sutures are typically removed one to two weeks after surgery.

Week 2

Sometime during the second week, many patients feel comfortable enough to return to their desk jobs as pain, swelling, and bruising decrease, and most individuals look more socially presentable. However, strenuous activity such as running, cardio, and heavy lifting is still restricted for at least four to six weeks or until further advised by Dr. Schwitzer.

Week 3

At this point, patients typically feel better day to day. The jawline and neck contour will be more defined; however, residual swelling and stiffness remain.

Week 4

About one month into recovery, you can expect to look much better than you did in your early recovery window, but keep in mind that you are still healing. Mild swelling, numbness, or tightness may still be noticeable. Overall, your neck contour is clearer, and incisions are closed but still healing.

Weeks 5-6

By this stage, your tissues are continuing to soften and settle underneath the skin, and most patients are close to their normal routine, assuming recovery has been uncomplicated. In addition, patients are usually cleared to exercise in this time range, but should consult with Dr. Schwitzer first.

After 6 Weeks to 3 Months

This is a quieter healing stage. Light swelling may persist for about three months. However, your results will be more evident, and the final refined results will continue to improve over time.

Neck Lift Recovery & Aftercare

To ensure you have an effective recovery, you should follow your postoperative instructions and perform these aftercare tips at home:

  • Avoid excessive bending or twisting of the neck.
  • Avoid direct sun exposure, and wear sunscreen.
  • Stay hydrated, and eat a protein-rich diet.
  • Avoid smoking and consuming alcohol.
  • Avoid tight-fitting clothing (e.g., turtlenecks) to prevent irritation.
  • Be patient with swelling, tightness, and bruising.

Take it easy during your recovery and listen to your surgeon to experience the fastest recovery possible.
