If you are struggling with sagging brows or frown lines that make you look sad or tired, you may be considering a brow lift, also known as a forehead lift. With a brow lift, you can restore a youthful forehead appearance and regain your facial expressions. But what is recovery like for brow lift surgery? A smooth recovery is essential in achieving the best possible results. Understanding the recovery process can help you prepare and set realistic expectations for the weeks following your brow lift.

Brow Lift Recovery Timeline

The healing process isn’t the same for every patient, but brow lift recovery is usually manageable. You can expect this general timeline to help you feel confident in preparing for your surgery and to plan accordingly.

First Few Days

Swelling and bruising are most noticeable in the first few days after getting a brow lift. Swelling and bruising usually migrate to the eyelids and cheeks and can continue down the face, often peaking by the third day of recovery. You may also feel numbness or tightness in your scalp or forehead.

Week One

During the first week, downtime is essential. Patients are advised to rest, keep their head elevated, apply cold compresses to the treated area, and avoid any strenuous activities. It’s also important to care for your incisions during this time. Gently cleanse your incision lines and apply your prescribed ointment as directed by Dr. Schwitzer.

Week Two

At this point, bruising and swelling should have decreased significantly, and any remaining bruising can be covered with light makeup. Numbness and tightness may still persist as your nerves continue to heal. Sutures may be removed by the second week, depending on the technique used for your brow lift.

Patients are typically cleared to return to desk jobs and resume light activities, but should still avoid any exercises that raise their heart rate and blood pressure.

Weeks Three to Four

Pain and discomfort should be resolved at this stage. Your eyebrows may seem higher than expected, but they will gradually settle into a natural position. It’s still advised to protect your incision lines and scalp, especially from direct sunlight.

Depending on how well you’ve healed, Dr. Schwitzer may clear you to gradually resume exercise after the fourth week.

Months Three to Six

Complete recovery can take up to six months. However, final results are more visible as the brows settle into a natural-looking position, swelling fully resolves, incision lines soften, and scars mature.

Brow Lift Recovery FAQs

Will I need drains after a brow lift?

Drains may or may not be necessary, depending on the type of brow lift procedure performed.

Do I need to stay with someone after a brow lift?

Patients will need a responsible adult to drive them home after surgery and monitor them for the first 48 hours following discharge.

Can I get a brow lift with eyelid surgery, and does that change recovery?

A brow lift can be combined with other procedures, such as a facelift. A blepharoplasty is also a very common surgical procedure that can be combined with a brow lift. If you undergo other procedures, it will affect your recovery timeline but also further rejuvenate your facial contour, allowing you to heal in a single recovery period.

When can I wash my hair after a brow lift?

Showering and bathing are usually permitted within a few days after a brow lift. However, patients should be careful with hot water, hair dryers, and combs as the scalp may be numb.

How do I take care of my brow lift incisions?

Dr. Schwitzer will be with you every step of the way, from the initial consultation to aftercare. It’s important to follow his instructions for dressings, wound care, scar treatment, medications, and activity restrictions. This is all to help you manage your brow lift recovery. Antibiotic ointments can be applied to your incision lines to keep the skin hydrated, minimize scarring, and reduce itching.
