Body weight is always fluctuating, especially as our bodies change over time. Life events such as pregnancy, significant weight loss, or menopause can create excess body fat in unwanted areas. It can be difficult to lose stubborn fat deposits even with rigorous exercise and a healthy diet, so liposuction is a great option to achieve the body you have been striving for. Liposuction can sculpt and shape your abdomen, back, hips, thighs, flanks, and other areas to optimize your overall figure.

If you are considering this popular surgical procedure, this blog will guide you through liposuction recovery so you can be fully informed on what to expect.

Liposuction Recovery Timeline

It’s important to remember that every patient is different, and everyone’s body heals differently. However, most patients can expect their liposuction recovery to follow this general timeline.

Days One to Three

Immediately after liposuction, you can expect the most discomfort. This includes swelling, bruising, mild soreness, and moderate pain. Dr. Schwitzer will provide prescribed medication to alleviate post-surgical pain and a compression garment to promote healing, reduce swelling, and maintain the new body contour.

Liposuction is generally an outpatient procedure, which means patients usually return home the same day of surgery. Additionally, having someone to help you at home until you have better mobility will make the recovery process more manageable.

During the first few days of recovery, downtime is very important. Patients should rest, avoid strenuous activities, and follow postoperative care instructions carefully (e.g., caring for their incisions and drains). However, light ambulation is encouraged to support blood circulation.

Week One

By the end of the first week, most patients begin to feel better. Swelling and bruising are still persistent, while pain and discomfort have improved significantly. Patients who have desk jobs or work remotely can typically return to work, depending on the extent of their liposuction. If your job requires a lot of physical exertion, you will likely require more time off. Dr. Schwitzer will provide a customized surgical plan based on your needs.

However, there are still activity restrictions. Demanding physical exercise, such as heavy lifting or cardio, should be avoided until Dr. Schwitzer permits it. Patients can participate in light walking to support blood circulation, but that is the extent of it.

Weeks Two to Four

At this stage, swelling continues to improve, bruising decreases significantly, and early results are visible. Keep in mind that your body is still in the process of healing; thus, compression garments are still worn to enhance results, and strenuous activities are still prohibited.

Social activities can resume at this point, as most patients feel comfortable being seen in public.

Months One to Three

Once you’ve reached one month into recovery, you will generally feel like yourself again. Final contours are more noticeable, and your skin tightens to your new shape. Any lingering swelling will continue to subside, and all normal activities can resume during this recovery phase.

Recovery from liposuction requires patience. Not only are the treated areas healing, but your internal tissues also need to settle and acclimate.

How Can I Support My Healing After Liposuction?

Once you are home and recovering from liposuction, there are some recovery tips that can further optimize your healing.

This includes:

  • Scheduling a lymphatic massage to remove excess fluid and reduce inflammation
  • Wearing your compression garment as directed
  • Avoiding inflammatory foods (e.g., processed meats, high-sugar foods and beverages, and fried foods)
  • Drinking plenty of fluids to stay hydrated
  • Refraining from exerting yourself to catch up on projects or tasks, as it’s important to rest your body for a safe recovery
  • Refraining from any prohibited activities such as swimming or immersion in water

These recovery tips will help you be as comfortable as possible and enhance your final results. Dr. Schwitzer will be with you every step of the way, from the initial consultation to postoperative care.
